Well crystallized ZnFe2O4 ultrafine particles with octahedral shape and a size of 300nm were prepared by a hydrothermal reaction using metal Zn sheet and FeCl2 as reactants in ammonia solutions at 180degreesC. As-prepared ferrite particles display high magnetization with maximum saturation magnetization (sigma(max)) 61.2emg g(-1) at 80K and 54.6emg g(-1) at 300K, respectively. The results demonstrated that hydrothermal process is an effective pathway for producing high quality ferrite ultrafine particles. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
