We report the isolation of the aquatic gram-negative bacterium Shewanella putrefaciens from the bronchoalveolar lavage in a case of ventilator-associated pneumonia. To our knowledge, this species has never been isolated from the lower respiratory tract before as a potential pathogen. Copyright (C) 2004 S. Karger AG, Basel.
