Sulfonated cellulose and starch as new catalysts were prepared and applied for the Fridedflander synthesis of quinolines through a condensation reaction of a 2-aminoarylketone with an activated CH-acid such as cyclic or acyclic beta-diketone or cyclic ketone compounds with high yields within several minutes under solvent-free conditions at 100 degrees C.
