A new type of hierarchically three-length-scaled porous zirconium oxide material with high BET surface area of 4 900 m(2) g(-1), having a uniform macroporous (300-500 nm) structure of a supermicroporous (1.5 nm) nanoparticle (similar to25 nm in size) assembly with irregular mesovoids (20-60 nm) in the macroporous walls, was prepared by a simple one-pot method in the presence of alkyltrimethylammonium surfactant, which should be significant for practical applications in multiple fields including catalysis and separation.
