A novel surfactant-encapsulated terbium-substituted heteropolyoxotungstate complex [L1](13)[Tb(SiW11O39)(2)](.) 30H(2)O (SEC-1) bearing mesomorphous groups was successfully prepared by the ionic self-assembling route, exhibiting characteristic thermotropic liquid-crystalline behavior.
