After 42 d of anoxic operation at 35 degrees C, nitrite ion was detected in a fixed-bed reactor effluent supplying ammonium and Fe(III) EDTA Na. Fe(III)-reducing microbes could oxidize ammonium ion to nitrite ion using Fe(III) EDTA ion and bicarbonate in this ferric ammonium oxidation (Feammox) process.
