This paper demonstrates that the tree population of landscapes relates to past land use and can therefore be interpreted and utilised to define specific historic units which have particular 'time depth' and ecological meaning. Both the spatial distribution and species composition of each tree was recorded in the analysis which can be replicated elsewhere. (c) 2004 Published by Elsevier B.V.
