Results are presented from an experimental study of the penetration of a liquid jet in a gaseous crossflow. The experiments were conducted in an atmospheric pressure facility at crossflow air velocities tip to 119 m/s and temperatures tip to 300 degrees C using distilled water, acetone, and 4-heptanone as test liquids. Penetration was determined from two-dimensional Mie scattering images of the spray. The results indicate that aerodynamic Weber number and liquid viscosity, through their effect on droplet size and the trajectory of the liquid column, respectively, affect the sprays penetration. Two correlations were developed based on these results that predict the effect of momentum flax ratio, Weber number, and liquid viscosity on spray penetration over the range of conditions studied.
