Melt spinning of poly-L,DL-lactide 70/30 has been studied. Fiber having diameter lower than 120 micron exhibited tensile modulus and strength in the range of 3-4 GPa and 130-180 MPa, respectively. Maximum attainable modulus and strength Of 4.7 GPa and 205 MPa were predicted, according to a proposed equation in dependence on the draw ratio. in vitro degradation performed in PBS solution at 37 degrees C, showed that after 4 weeks fibers maintained adequate properties for tissue engineering applications.
