Light therapy is widely used in dermatology. An enhancement to this therapy is the use of a photosensitizing medication along with light therapy, known as photodynamic therapy (PDT). PDT is primarily used for the treatment of precancerous lesions, acne vulgaris, and nonmelonoma skin cancer, and has also been shown to improve the appearance of photodamaged skin. This article reviews the available literature for the treatment of photodamaged skin using PDT along with recent advancements in PDT for various dermatologic indications.
