Recent studies have identified the important role of cancer stem cells (CSCs) in carcinogenesis and relapse. However, with respect to multistage cancer metastasis, the role of CSCs has not been well-defined. In several human cancers, data showed that some phenotypic subsets of CSCs were responsible for cancer metastasis. In this review, we surveyed recent advances in the role and mechanism of metastatic CSCs. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
