The current paper presents different preparation methods for cordierite ceramic powders: solid state reactions and wet preparation. In the solid state method, gamma-Al2O3, SiO2 and Mg(CO3)(2) were used as raw materials. For wet preparation, the following compounds were used as precursors: silica gel, AlCl3 center dot 6H(2)O and Mg(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O. The powders obtained by the different methods employed were characterized in what concerns mineralogical composition and granulontetric distribution. It was determined that the results are influenced by the nature of raw materials used and the processing conditions. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
