The real-life test (RLT) or real-life experience (RTE) has been a fixture in the management of gender identity disorder for four decades. By providing patients with a gamut of experiences previously only imagined, the RLE enables individuals to rethink their lives. The scientific foundation of the RLE is at the level of expert opinion. The specific issues of purpose, duration, assessment, and relationship to future happiness are surprisingly unclarified, however.
