This study investigates the interrelationships between community attachment, economic dependence on tourism, perceived positive tourism impacts, perceived negative impacts and support for tourism development. A total of 239 respondents completed a survey conducted at Tainan city, a heritage city in southern Taiwan. The data were analysed using a structural equation modelling (SEM) technique; and the results reveal that both community attachment and economic dependence have significant effects on positive tourism impact and, in turn, can affect the support for tourism development. Although both impacts have significant effects on support for tourism development, the effect from the positive impact is much greater than the negative impact.
