Corncob was treated by dilute H2SO4. The hydrolysate contained 45.7 g sugar/l. Without concentration or adding other nutrients, the hydrolysate, after being detoxified by overliming and adsorption with activated charcoal, was used for oil production using Trichosporon cutaneum. After 8 days' growth in shake-flasks, the biomass was 22.1 g/l with a lipid content of 36%. The lipid yield per mass of sugar was 17.4% (w/w). Corncob thus is a promising raw material for microbial oil production by this yeast.
