Quantitative Studies of the Key Aspects in Selective Acetylene Hydrogenation on Pd(111) by Microkinetic Modeling with Coverage Effects and Molecular Dynamics

Wenbo Xie et al.

Summary: Selective acetylene hydrogenation on Pd(111) was comprehensively investigated using a detailed microkinetic model developed with density functional theory energies. By combining coverage-dependent calculations and AIMD results, a full first-principles kinetic simulation was achieved, showing that the coverage-dependent model gives more reasonable results. The study found that the activity is mainly influenced by the barriers of the first two hydrogenation steps, with ethylene desorption and C2H4* hydrogenation barriers significantly impacting selectivity, particularly the former.

First-principles microkinetic analysis of Lewis acid sites in Zn-ZSM-5 for alkane dehydrogenation and its implication to methanol-to-aromatics conversion

Yu-Jue Du et al.

Summary: The study found that in ZSM-5, the ZnOH+ species is unstable and may convert to the other three Zn species based on thermodynamics analysis. The dehydrogenation reaction involves the Zn-alkyl fragment, and the concerted pathway is kinetically favored over the stepwise pathway.

Mechanism of methanol synthesis on Ni(110)†

Guowen Peng et al.

Summary: Planewave density functional theory calculations were used to investigate methanol synthesis pathways on Ni(110), revealing the presence of a redox mechanism favored over carboxyl-mediated mechanisms, dominant formate pathway for formic acid formation, and coexistence of formic-acid- and dioxymethylene-mediated pathways for CO2 and CO hydrogenation. The hydrogenation of CH2O* to CH3O* and further to CH2OH* were found to contribute to methanol synthesis, with CH3O* hydrogenation likely being the rate-determining step on Ni(110). Additionally, the promotional effect of CO via hydrogenation to HCO* was demonstrated. Further microkinetic modeling could provide more mechanistic insights.

Recent advances in hydrogenation of CO2 into hydrocarbons via methanol intermediate over heterogeneous catalysts

Poonam Sharma et al.

Summary: Efforts have been made to efficiently convert CO2 to hydrocarbons as a way to reduce reliance on fossil fuels and mitigate the accumulation of excess CO2 in the atmosphere. Various studies on direct and indirect hydrogenation of CO2 via methanol as an intermediate have been discussed, along with detailed analysis of catalyst design, performance, and reaction mechanisms. Challenges and future directions in the direct synthesis of hydrocarbons from CO2 have also been outlined.

CO2 reduction and ethane dehydrogenation on transition metal catalysts: mechanistic insights, reactivity trends and rational design of bimetallic alloys

Fatima Jalid et al.

Summary: In this study, reactivity trends of transition metal catalysts for ethane dehydrogenation using CO2 as an oxidant were investigated. The ab initio microkinetic model revealed the dominant routes for CO2 reduction and ethylene formation over different catalyst surfaces. The study also proposed the design of bimetallic alloys to enhance CO2 consumption activity and reduce coke formation in the dehydrogenation reaction.
