Summary: This study evaluated the efficacy of sterile surgical helmet systems (SSHS) in protecting surgeons from respiratory droplets and found that SSHS did not protect against aerosol particulate and are not effective in preventing COVID-19. In fact, the fan system used may even increase the risk by drawing in particulates and delaying recognition of mask leaks.

Effect of Tocilizumab vs Usual Care in Adults Hospitalized With COVID-19 and Moderate or Severe Pneumonia A Randomized Clinical Trial

Olivier Hermine et al.

Summary: In this clinical trial of COVID-19 patients with pneumonia requiring oxygen support but not in the ICU, tocilizumab did not reduce WHO-CPS scores below 5 by day 4 but may have reduced the risk of needing noninvasive ventilation, mechanical ventilation, or death by day 14. There was no difference in mortality by day 28. Further studies are needed to confirm these preliminary results.

Summary: This study evaluated the use of tocilizumab in hospitalized COVID-19 pneumonia patients and found no significant benefit compared to standard care. Further randomized clinical trials with blinded, placebo-controlled methods are needed to confirm these results and explore potential applications of tocilizumab in different stages of the disease.

COVID-19 aerosol box as protection from droplet and aerosol contaminations in healthcare workers performing airway intubation: a randomised cross-over simulation study

Summary: The study found that using an aerosol box significantly reduced the number of contaminated body regions pre-doffing of PPE for healthcare workers, but did not show a significant difference in post-doffing contamination. However, using an aerosol box increased intubation time and decreased operator mobility and visibility.

Summary: Andreakos and colleagues conducted a study comparing patients with COVID-19 and influenza, finding that COVID-19 patients exhibited a dysregulated interferon response with diminished and delayed interferon production compared to flu patients. In COVID-19 patients, pro-inflammatory cytokines were produced before interferons and persisted longer, leading to worsened clinical outcomes.
