Evaluating Climate Models with the CLIVAR 2020 ENSO Metrics Package

Yann Y. Planton et al.

Summary: Evaluation of ENSO simulations is crucial for understanding climate change, and the new CLIVAR 2020 ENSO metrics package allows for better diagnosis and comparison of model performance, helping to select suitable models for analysis. CMIP6 models show significant improvements in most ENSO-relevant metrics compared to CMIP5.

The Double-Peaked El Nino and Its Physical Processes

Na-Yeon Shin et al.

Summary: Observational analyses have revealed the occurrence of double-peaked (DP) El Nino events since 2000, where two warm centers develop concurrently in the central and eastern Pacific, showing more distinctive anomalous precipitation along the Pacific intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). These peculiar precipitation anomalies play a critical role in enhancing equatorial westerly wind stress anomalies, aiding in the development of the eastern SSTA peak by deepening the thermocline in the eastern Pacific.

Multidecadal climate oscillations during the past millennium driven by volcanic forcing

Michael E. Mann et al.

Summary: Research suggests that the Atlantic Multidecadal Oscillation may actually be influenced by competing effects of anthropogenic greenhouse gases and sulfate aerosols, rather than being an internal climate oscillation. By comparing climate model simulations and paleoclimate data, it is concluded that the apparent multidecadal oscillations are likely artifacts of volcanic activity during the preindustrial era, projecting onto the 50- to 70-year frequency band. Thus, there is currently no compelling evidence for internal multidecadal oscillations in the climate system.
