Poly(vinyl alcohol) Hydrogels with Broad-Range Tunable Mechanical Properties via the Hofmeister Effect

Shuwang Wu et al.

Summary: This study presents a strategy to broadly and reversibly alter the mechanical properties of hydrogels by tuning the aggregation states of polymer chains based on the Hofmeister effect. An ultra-tough PVA hydrogel with exceptional mechanical properties is fabricated, showcasing continuous and reversible modulation of various mechanical properties over a large window. This strategy enables high mechanical performance and broad dynamic tunability, serving as a universal platform for applications ranging from biomedicine to wearable electronics.

Polymer-Water Interaction Enabled Intelligent Moisture Regulation in Hydrogels

Yuxi Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the moisture transfer behaviors of hydrogels at different humidities, revealing the self-regulation capability of certain hydrogels to maintain stability in varying humidity environments. Molecular dynamic simulations show that water inside hydrogels undergoes increasing intensive intermolecular bonding during evaporation, leading to reduced vapor pressure and self-regulation. Additionally, the self-regulation mechanism is found to be closely related to the Young's modulus of hydrogels.
