Evaluation of hydrogeological impact of tunnel engineering in a karst aquifer by coupled discrete-continuum numerical simulations

Xiaokang Zheng et al.

Summary: The study utilized a coupled discrete-continuum modeling approach to analyze the impact of tunnel construction on karst groundwater systems. Tunnel construction led to widespread groundwater drawdown with a 30% decrease in total discharge through karst conduits. Simulation results predict that after completion of lining, the groundwater system will slowly approach a level 5-10m below the undisturbed level.
