Measuring Solute Concentration with Terahertz Time-Domain Spectroscopy in Single and Multiphase Systems

Johanna Kolbel et al.

Summary: A versatile setup based on a microfluidic platform is developed for investigating liquid samples at various temperatures using terahertz spectroscopy. This setup allows for concentration measurements of both pure liquid phase solutions and semicrystalline systems, with equivalent solute concentration calculated from low frequency absorption during crystallization. The MgSO4-water system is used as an example to illustrate this novel method.

Bulk and interfacial nanostructure and properties in deep eutectic solvents: Current perspectives and future directions

Saffron J. Bryant et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are a tailorable class of solvents that are distinct from conventional solvents. They possess unique bulk liquid and interfacial nanostructures, and their physicochemical properties are dictated by structure-property relationships. However, there is still a significant gap in our understanding of the underlying factors that govern their solvent properties.

Terahertz optics-driven phase transition in two-dimensional multiferroics

Jian Zhou et al.

Summary: The study proposes using a terahertz laser to trigger ferroic order switching in two-dimensional multiferroics, enhancing data storage density and read/write speed without damage. Through first-principles calculations, optically induced electronic, phononic, and mechanical responses of two experimentally fabricated multiferroic materials were investigated, showing the effective manipulation of stability in different orientation variants via laser polarization direction. The ultrafast transition kinetics and avoidance of conventional nucleation-growth phase transition processes were also demonstrated.

Atomistic Insights into the Anisotropic and Low Thermal Conductivity in Neopentyl Glycol Crystals: A Molecular Dynamics Study

Simin Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal transport mechanism of neopentyl glycol (NPG) crystals through atomistic molecular dynamics simulations, revealing the anisotropy of thermal conductivity due to hydrogen-bond networks and the reasons for low thermal conductivity including gaps in the phonon spectrum and ultrashort phonon mean free paths. The research also demonstrates the impact of vacancy defects on thermal conductivity, showing abnormal increases with defect concentration, providing insights for enhancing the thermal conductivity of NPG as an environment-friendly refrigerant.

Nanoscale Cu(II) MOFs Formed via Microemulsion: Vibrational Mode Characterization Performed using a Combined FTIR, Synchrotron Far-IR, and Periodic DFT Approach

Courtney Ennis et al.

Summary: Two Cu(II) metal-organic frameworks were prepared on the nanoscale at room temperature using a microemulsion method, and their thermochemical and gas sorption properties were characterized by vibrational spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The results showed that vibrational mode analysis was effective in screening the materials for their propensity toward gas uptake and guest species diffusion in microporous environments.

Phase-dependent dielectric properties and proton conduction of neopentyl glycol

Hailong Pan et al.

Summary: The dielectric properties and proton conduction of neopentyl glycol (NPG) were studied across different phases, showing phase-dependent behavior. The temperature dependence of direct current conductivity in both the molten and plastic crystalline phases follows the VFT equation, suggesting different proton conduction mechanisms.
