Photonic Cellulose Films with Vivid Structural Colors: Fabrication and Selectively Chemical Response

Zi-Li Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method for constructing vivid structural-color composite films using dopamine infiltration and post-polymerization. The composite films, which combine the structural coloration of cellulose nanocrystals (CNC) with the strong light absorption of polydopamine (PDA), can quantitatively and selectively detect organic solvents through visible color changes. The study also defines a three-dimensional Hansen solubility sphere to control the sensing selectivity.

A Green and Iridescent Composite of Cellulose Nanocrystals with Wide Solvent Resistance and Strong Mechanical Properties

Kai Feng et al.

Summary: In this study, iridescent and hydrophilic CNCs films were transformed into films with excellent water resistance and resistance to strongly acidic or basic aqueous solutions and various organic solvents by co-assembling with oxidized starch (OS) and tannic acid (TA). The composite films maintained structural integrity and vibrant color even after immersion in water for 24 hours. The cross-linking via hydrogen bonds with tannic acid significantly improved solvent resistance and mechanical properties of CNCs films, expanding their applications in harsh conditions.

Summary: The study found that polyols and saccharides with multi-hydroxyl groups can promote a red-shift reflection in cellulose nanocrystals, while organic acids and amino acids have limited regulating effects. Additionally, acidic or alkaline functional groups, isoelectric point, compatible saccharide ring, molecular weight, and crystallization of dopants are crucial factors for tuning the structure and properties of CNCs.
