Interactive effect of biochar and compost with Poaceae and Fabaceae plants on remediation of total petroleum hydrocarbons in crude oil contaminated soil

Uzma Yousaf et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of soil amendments (biochar and compost) on phytoremediation of TPHs by plants from Poaceae and Fabaceae families. Results showed that biochar and compost improved plant growth and TPH removal, with ryegrass and white clover exhibiting the highest removal rates. Different plant species responded differently to soil amendments in terms of TPH degradation.

Soil conditioners improve rhizodegradation of aged petroleum hydrocarbons and enhance the growth of Lolium multiflorum

Fida Hussain et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that utilizing a combination of amendments such as biochar, compost, and immobilized microorganisms can improve hydrocarbon removal efficiency from aged and contaminated soils. The synergistic effects of these amendments stimulated plant rhizospheric activity, resulting in higher root biomass and seed germination rates. This approach shows potential for enhancing bioremediation processes in challenging contaminated soil conditions.

Recent Advanced Technologies for the Characterization of Xenobiotic-Degrading Microorganisms and Microbial Communities

Sandhya Mishra et al.

Summary: Global environmental contamination with a complex mixture of xenobiotics has become a major issue, and microbial-assisted degradation is considered to be the most effective approach. Microorganisms exhibit remarkable catabolic potential and can utilize xenobiotic contaminants for growth and metabolic activities, showcasing significant biodegradation potential in harsh contaminated environments. Advanced molecular technologies are employed for the characterization of pollutant-degrading microorganisms, providing insights into their genetic diversity and community structures.

Phospholipid fatty acid (PLFA) analysis as a tool to estimate absolute abundances from compositional 16S rRNA bacterial metabarcoding data

Natascha Lewe et al.

Summary: Monitoring microbial biodiversity through DNA analysis from environmental samples is popular for its rapid, cost-effective, and flexible nature. Metabarcoding and PLFA analysis provide different perspectives on microbial composition, with adjusting relative abundances based on PLFA biomarkers leading to significant changes in microbial community compositions across different substrates. Including independent estimates of microbial biomass can enhance comparability among metabarcoding libraries from environmental samples.
