Underneath mechanisms into the super effective degradation of PFOA by BiOF nanosheets with tunable oxygen vacancies on exposed (101) facets

Jingzhen Wang et al.

Summary: The construction of surface defects and exposed reactive facets is an effective strategy to enhance photocatalyst performance. In this study, BiOF photocatalysts with tunable oxygen vacancies on the (101) facets were prepared by adjusting the concentration of ethylene glycol. The appropriate concentration of oxygen vacancies and exposed facets promoted electron transfer and introduced an intermediate band, resulting in improved photocatalytic activity for degrading perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). DFT calculations and LC-MS-MS results were used to identify active sites and degradation pathways of PFOA, providing valuable insights for understanding the photocatalytic degradation process.

Summary: This study sampled and analyzed soil and groundwater from an AFFF-impacted site, finding that PFAS concentrations were generally higher at depth than near the surface. In FTA soil, zwitterionic and cationic compounds were the major components of total PFAS mass. The composition of PFAS class, chain length, and structural isomers changed with depth and distance from the FTA, suggesting in situ transformation and differential transport.

Adsorption and solid-phase photocatalytic degradation of perfluorooctane sulfonate in water using gallium-doped carbon-modified titanate nanotubes

Yangmo Zhu et al.

Summary: The new adsorptive photocatalyst Ga/TNTs@AC showed faster adsorption kinetics and higher affinity for PFOS, degrading and mineralizing a significant percentage of pre-sorbed PFOS within a short UV irradiation time. The efficient PFOS photodegradation regenerates the catalyst for repeated uses without the need for chemical regenerants, attributing to the oxygen vacancies that facilitate O-2(center dot-) generation and suppress recombination of e(-)/h(+) pairs. The degradation of PFOS by Ga/TNTs@AC involves the cleavage of the sulfonate group and conversion into PFOA through a stepwise defluorination mechanism.

Mechanism insights into the facet-dependent photocatalytic degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid on BiOCl nanosheets

Yaoyao Wu et al.

Summary: The photocatalytic degradation of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) using BiOCl nanosheets with {010} or {001} facets showed that {010}-BiOCl exhibited higher catalytic activity compared to {001}-BiOCl in the degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA). The higher catalytic activity of {010}-BiOCl was attributed to the in-situ generated surface oxygen vacancies and strong interaction with PFOA molecules. Furthermore, the nanosheets with {010} facets showed the highest adsorption capacity and lowest adsorption energy for PFOA molecules, while photogenerated holes and surface hydroxyl radicals on {010} facets played a significant role in the degradation process. Additionally, F- ions as by-products tended to block the catalytic sites but could be removed using a simple chemical precipitation approach with Ca2+ ions to recover the catalytic performance.

Summary: The Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst of core-shell CeO2@NiAl-LDHs shows high efficiency in removing PFOA, with a photodegradation performance of 90.2% and 36.1 mg g(-1) h(-1). Factors affecting the photodegradation process were explored, and the presence of a built-in electric field (BIEF) in the heterojunction was confirmed to promote photogenerated carriers and enhance photocatalytic performance. The efficient degradation of PFOA is attributed to the synergistic effects of reduction and defluorination by electrons, as well as oxidation by active free radicals.
