Development of nutrition counselling resources for family medicine using the knowledge to action framework

Jodi D. Fitzgerald et al.

Summary: Both healthcare professionals and patients recognize the importance of nutrition counselling in improving dietary behaviors, but barriers exist that hinder the process. Healthcare professionals suggested that improving patient handouts, offering community nutrition classes, and community cooking classes could enhance nutrition counselling; while patients identified coupons, sample meal plans and recipes, and websites for recipes and cooking videos as helpful resources for consuming a healthy diet.

Family medicine physicians' report strong support, barriers and preferences for Registered Dietitian Nutritionist care in the primary care setting

Lauren R. Sastre et al.

Summary: The study found that most respondents did not have a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist on-site, but they showed high interest in integrating one (94.9%) and preferred full-time, part-time, or off-site RDN care (49.1%, 39.5%, and 11.4% respectively). The biggest barriers to referrals were perceived cost for the patient and uncertainty in finding a local RDN.
