Configurational Entropy Driven High-Pressure Behaviour of a Flexible Metal-Organic Framework (MOF)

Pia Vervoorts et al.

Summary: Flexible metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit large structural flexibility with temperature or pressure variations, which is of high technological and scientific significance. The targeted design of flexible MOFs requires control over macroscopic thermodynamics determined by microscopic chemical interactions, presenting a challenge. This study reveals configurational entropy from linker side-chain modifications as a crucial factor in determining the thermodynamics of flexible MOFs, offering a new perspective on accessing the free energy landscape in MOFs.

Monitoring Dynamics, Structure, and Magnetism of Switchable Metal-Organic Frameworks via H-1-Detected MAS NMR

Jan Blahut et al.

Summary: A toolbox for rapid characterization of powdered samples of paramagnetic metal-organic frameworks by H-1-detected solid-state NMR was presented, with tailored radiofrequency irradiation schemes and fast MAS rates helping to overcome sensitivity and resolution limits. The approach was demonstrated on DUT-8(Ni) to detect and assign H-1 and C-13 resonances of organic linkers in a few hours with only 1-2 mg of sample, providing information on structure, dynamics, and metal electronic properties. The experiments revealed new possibilities for describing local and global structural changes and correlating them to electronic and magnetic properties of the assemblies.

Adaptive response of a metal-organic framework through reversible disorder-disorder transitions

S. Ehrling et al.

Summary: Porous metal-organic frameworks are excellent candidates for gas storage, separation, catalysis, and sensing due to their ultrahigh porosity and varied functionalities. Some frameworks have the ability to open their pores to specific guests and switch between two stability minima, enabling highly selective separation. A recent study showed a metal-organic framework based on nonlinear linkers can adopt a complex family of degenerate disordered configurations through guest exchange.

Influence of flexible side-chains on the breathing phase transition of pillared layer MOFs: a force field investigation

Julian Keupp et al.

Summary: The prototypical pillared layer MOFs, formed by a square lattice of paddle-wheel units and connected by dinitrogen pillars, can undergo a breathing phase transition by a wine-rack type motion of the square lattice. The behavior was studied using an accurate force field, revealing an interface between a closed and an open pore phase during the phase transformation. The simulations showed that in small supercells with periodic boundary conditions, a synchronous transformation of the entire crystal occurs, but the interface is visible when longer flexible side-chains are present.
