Current estimates show that 5% to 10% of the pancreatic cancer burden is because of a primary genetic cause. This article presents an historical overview of hereditary pancreatic cancer. Genetic epidemiology studies and genetic disorders known to predispose to pancreatic cancer are reviewed, and important clinical issues pertaining to the management of these pancreatic cancer families are addressed.
