Ce-doped yttrium orthosilicate is a blue phosphor in a non-sulfur-containing phosphor triad for FED displays. Its low luminous efficiency does not allow one to achieve a necessary light output. We have synthesized a modified yttrium orthosilicate, non-sulfur-containing blue phosphor and fabricated various 4 phosphor screens with superior performance. This performance is significantly better than that of Nichia 1047 phosphor. Based on this blue phosphor and phosphor screen performance, a white light output of 4.5-5 lm/W becomes possible in FED displays. This light output is drastically higher than that of compatible AMLCD displays. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
