One-step syntheses of a number of water-soluble sodium and potassium phosphino amino acid salts from primary arylphosphines (2,4,6-R3C6H2)PH2 (R = H, Me, Pr-i), formaldehyde and sodium or potassium glycinate, with unsubstituted and 2,3,6-trisubstituted aryl substituents on the phosphorus atom are reported. The structures of the disodium and dipotassium 1,3-di(carboxylatomethyl)-5-aryl-1,3,5-diazaphosphorinanes were established on the basis of IR and H-1, C-13 and P-31 NMR data.
