Acne vulgaris, more commonly termed acne, is the most common skin disease treated by physicians. It affects an estimated 17 million people in the United States, including 85% or more of adolescents and young adults. Acne is a chronic condition that may last for years and cause emotional distress and permanent scarring. Although there is no cure, medications can control the disease and limit or prevent scar formation. Most adolescents with acne can be managed successfully by their primary care provider.
