In this paper, a novel unique co-ordinate ascent mapping formulation for infinite elements is developed. Reciprocal, exponential, and logarithmic are the decay types with which the proposed formulation is concerned. As a matter of generalisation, each decay type may be utilised through any optional decay pattern. An inherent characteristic in this postulated formulation is its capability to provide an arbitrary pole position, which is not given a due consideration in any of the earlier formulations. The mapping and shape functions for several two- and three-dimensional elements, as well as a Row diagram for finite/infinite element stiffness subroutine are presented. The proposed formulation is tested for a number of one-, two-, and three-dimensional infinite domain problems. (C) 2000 Civil-Comp Ltd. and Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
