Despite traditional concerns associated with youth strength training, a compelling body of evidence now suggests that strength training can be a safe and effective method of conditioning for children and adolescents provided that appropriate training guidelines are followed. In addition to increasing muscular strength and improving selected motor performance skills, regular participation in a strength training program may better prepare young athletes fur sports participation and may reduce the incidence and severity of sports-related injuries. When designing strength training programs for children and adolescents, it is important to be aware of the potential benefits and concerns associated with this type of training and interindividual differences in stress tolerance. This article explores the effects of strength training on children and adolescents and highlights related benefits, concerns, and program design considerations.
