An asymptotic method of averaging is applied to the extended Aris problem in which a solute is transported in a gas flow along a circular tube subject to phase exchange with and reaction in a stationary liquid film held on the wall of the tube. In addition to recovering the Aris dispersion coefficient, the second-order effects of the reaction on the advection velocity and the reaction rate itself are also derived. Dependence of these effects on the partition coefficient and the ratio of fluid amounts are examined. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
