By providing theoretical insight into the nature of triple bonding between heavier Group 14 elements, the electronic and steric effects of substituents on silicon-silicon triple bonds are investigated to make disilynes synthetically accessible as stable compounds. Synthetic targets worthy of experimental testing are predicted for RSi=SiR. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.
