This article discusses some current problems in antibacterial combination therapy, including methods of laboratory testing for synergistic effect of antibiotic combinations, synergy and antagonism of known mechanisms as studied in experimental models, and antibiotic combinations available commercially. The author also examines clinical situations where a therapeutic benefit can be expected by prescribing a combination of antibiotics.
