Clinical cyathostomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by a sudden release of huge numbers of encysted small strongly or cyathostome larvae from the lining of the large intestine of horses. Included among the clinical signs are diarrhea, ventral abdominal edema, weight loss, pyrexia, colic, hypoproteinemia, and the presence of large numbers of larval cyathostomes in the feces. The disease is reported more commonly in the winter and spring and after treatment with antiparasitic compounds effective on the luminal stages of these parasites.
