This paper will define the signal processing technique known as matched-field processing and provide an overview of its recent applications to inverse problems of underwater acoustics. These applications include: the localization of a source (the determination of source range, depth, and azimuth), tomography for the estimation of deep ocean sound-speed profiles (or, equivalently, temperature) over large volumes of water, the estimation of shallow water bottom properties (such as sediment thicknesses, sound speeds, densities, and attenuations), the evaluation of numerical model performance: (relative to benchmark models), and the localization of array hydrophones (estimation of array deformation).
