Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) remains the most common reason for hospitalization and diabetes-related morbidity and mortality among individuals with diabetes in the pediatric age range. This article discusses the underlying pathophysiology of DKA and relates this to the successful management approach used to treat DKA in children and adolescents. Particular attention is devoted to important issues related to fluid management and prevention and recognition of cerebral edema.
