Carbon nanotube arrays with densities up to 10(12) cm(-2), have been successfully synthesized by pyrolysis of acetylene within high ordered nanochannel arrays in an alumina template. Transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectrum analysis show that the carbon nanotubes are well graphitized. The influence of preparation conditions on the structure of carbon nanotubes within the alumina template is discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.
