Heterocyclic thioamides usually occurring in their thioketo form are referred to as 'thiones' and their corresponding anions as 'thionates'. The coordination chemistry of this group of ligands is rich due to their versatility in adopting monodentate, bridging and chelating modes of coordination. The recent advances made in this field of coordination chemistry are reported covering the period from 1996 to 1999, i.e. from the last review published on the subject by the late Eric Raper until about a year after his decease. The coverage is aimed at being brief indicating the main points in every publication presented. Thiones and thionates are classified as five-, six- and higher member rings and condensed rings and their coordination to transition and non-transition metals an discussed separately.
