This paper presents an extensive review of studies about natural convective heat transfer coefficients on surfaces in two- and three-dimensional enclosures with primary focus on those with a direct application to heat transfer in buildings. Comparison between the correlations for the heat transfer coefficient showed that large discrepancies could occur. The discrepancies are found to be up to a factor of 5 for vertical surfaces, up to a factor of 4 for horizontal surfaces facing upward, and up to a factor of 8 for horizontal surfaces facing downward.
