Pyridine nucleotides are mostly stored within mitochondria where they are involved in different functions ranging from energy metabolism to cellular signaling. Here we discuss the mechanisms of mitochondrial NAD(+) metabolism and release that mag contribute to the crucial roles played by these organelles as triggers or amplifiers of physiological and pathological events.
