Acute thrombocytopenia associated with abciximab therapy has been well described, although the exact mechanism remains obscure. We report a case of delayed severe thrombocytopenia associated with abciximab therapy for percutaneous coronary intervention that occurred following hospital discharge. The detection of this phenomenon is important as it may portend heightened risk for severe or profound thrombocytopenia on subsequent reexposure to abciximab therapy. (C) 2001 Wiley-Liss, Inc.
