Two new disulfated triterpene glycosides, cucumariosides F-1 and F-2, have been isolated from the sea cucumber Eupentacta fraudatrix and their structures elucidated by NMR spectroscopy, mass-spectrometry and chemical transformations. These glycosides were also identified using LC-ESI MS/MS in the starfish Patina pectinifera, which preys on E. fraudatrix in aquaria. This indicates that toxic triterpene glycosides may be used as food markers in some predatory starfish. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
