We present an experimental study of the hydrogen solubility in nanocrystalline Pd-Au. Hydrogen enrichment and depletion at grain boundaries results in a strongly size dependent interface stress, which is compensated by a pressure in the bulk. We determine the interface stress and the pressure as a function of the hydrogen concentration in the bulk from data for the macroscopic strain and for the change in lattice constant upon alloying.
