A combination of structural, biochemical and functional studies with the flavivirus tick-borne encephalitis virus has revealed the characteristics of a new class of viral fusion protein, class II, that is unrelated to the class I viral fusion proteins for which influenza virus hernagglutinin is the prototype. New structural data have shown that the alphaviruses, another group of icosahedral enveloped viruses, also have class II fusion proteins, suggesting a common origin.
