Due to complex physicochemical processes, concretions develop variable, but distinctive morphologies. Reflecting the state of the sediment in subsequent stages of diagenesis and epigenesis, they deserve a study and systematization in their own right. At the same time, concretional morphologies illustrate the effect of hierarchic self-organization, which is a basic element also in biological evolution. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
