HeartCare is an Internet-based information and support service for patientsrecovering at home from coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. The system is designed to meet the nursing challenges in health information to support needs of CABG patients. HeartCare (a) provides information and support, tailored to patients' individual and changing recovery needs during CABG recovery, (b) makes recovery information more accessible for timely use by patients, and (c) extends the scope of nursing services to CABG patients from hospital through home. An ongoing randomized controlled study is underway to evaluate the clinical outcomes of patients' use of the HeartCare system and to examine its acceptance as a usable resource for postCABG patients who have limited previous computer experience.
