The stress-strain behavior of soft and hard lead zirconate titanate (PZT) materials has been determined in compression tests. Compressive stress-strain curves are used for the prediction of internal stresses caused by domain switching in piezoelectric actuators. The calculated domain switching versus internal stresses is presented for the different materials and results discussed. Prediction of irreversible domain switching behavior during operation and during poling procedure will help to prevent associated fatigue effects and structural damage. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V.
