A manganese porphyrin having four 2,2'-bipyridyl groups on its meso positions was synthesized. In the presence of Cu2+ ions it catalyzes the regioselective oxidation of steroid substrates carrying auxiliary metal coordinating goups. (C) 2001 Academic Press.
